Current sense resistors, also known as shunts, are the technology of choice for measuring current. In order not to adversely affect the current flow, the resistance of the shunt is small, producing a proportionally small voltage across it. The small voltage across the shunt resistor must typically increase from tens or hundreds of millivolts to a fraction of a volt. This task is usually performed by an op amp or a current sense amplifier. The current sense amplifier is a specialized operational amplifier that integrates a laser-trimmed precision resistor network to set the gain.
